Premium print vs online printers
Online printers are much cheaper for simple jobs, and for many buyers they are the right choice. Here is when, with real published prices, and when a premium service is worth paying more for.
Use an online printer when price and speed matter most and your file is ready; use a premium print service when you want a person to specify the job and check every proof, and premium stock as the default. For 250 laminated business cards, published online prices started at $58.99 (Vistaprint, 7 October 2026) and $59 (Officeworks, 7 October 2026). Proof & Print's featured 250, on 450gsm soft-touch with spot gloss, is $240 inc GST with metro delivery, or $165 without the spot gloss.
When is an online printer the better choice?
An online printer will suit you better if any of these is true:
- You need cards tomorrow or this week. Our business cards usually take 5 to 7 business days after proof approval. Many online printers are faster.
- Lowest price is the priority. On a basic laminated card, online printers were roughly a third to a quarter of our price when we checked.
- It is a small, simple run. Our minimum order is $150. If you need 100 plain cards, that minimum works against you.
- Your file is right and you don't need it checked. If you or your designer already check artwork carefully, you are paying us for something you don't need.
- You want to order at midnight without talking to anyone. Online printers are built for that.
When is a premium print service worth the extra?
- The details carry risk. Agency signage with licence numbers and auction wording, a firm's letterhead with practising details and a professional standards scheme line, cards for a team of thirty. A person checks each against your list before it prints.
- You order across a team or branches. One consultant keeps stocks, colours and names consistent, and the same person handles your reorders.
- You want the premium spec without researching it. Our builder opens on the configuration we would recommend, and we explain each step down in plain words.
- You want one price that includes everything. Our prices include GST, the proof check and metro delivery. Several online prices in the table below exclude delivery.

At 500 cards, our featured spec is $325. The Online Printer listed 500 400gsm matt laminated cards at $99 (12 October 2026), Snap's online ordering listed 500 at $164.75 before delivery, and a letterpress studio sits higher again: The Distillery's Classic package was $490 for 500.
What does the difference in price pay for?
Roughly, three things. The card: 450gsm with a soft-touch laminate and a spot gloss detail is heavier and more finished than a standard 350gsm laminated card. The check: a person reads every proof against our 12-point checklist, flags what is yours to decide and fixes what is technical. The service: a named consultant, metro delivery included, and a reprint at no cost if a mistake is ours.
If the first matters to you and the other two don't, a premium online printer such as MOO or Paperlust may be the middle ground.
How can I compare for myself?
Order samples. Our sample box is $25, credited on your first order, and most online printers sell or give away sample packs. Hold the cards side by side; weight and finish are easier to judge in the hand than on a screen.
Comparisons use publicly available information as at the dates shown and are a guide only. Prices change; check each provider's own site. All trade marks belong to their respective owners, and no provider named here endorses or is affiliated with Proof & Print.
Questions
Something else? All questions or ask your consultant.
Why are premium business cards more expensive than online printer cards?
Part of the difference is the card: heavier stock, a soft-touch laminate and a finish such as spot gloss. Most of it is the service: a consultant who specifies the job, a person who reads your proof against a written checklist, and metro delivery included in the price. If you don't need those, an online printer is the sensible choice.
When should I use an online printer instead of Proof & Print?
When you need cards in a day or two, want the lowest price, are ordering a small simple run, or are confident your file is correct and don't need anyone to check it. Online printers do those jobs well.
Can I see the difference in stock before deciding?
Yes. Our sample box holds our stocks and finishes, and the cost is credited on your first order. Many online printers also offer sample packs, so you can compare side by side.
Is a proof check worth paying for?
It depends what a mistake would cost you. A wrong number on 250 cards is a reprint. A missing licence number on agency signage, or an outdated partner name on a firm's letterhead, can cost far more than the print. A person reading the proof against a checklist catches most of those.
Not sure which you need?
Send a brief with the job and the date you need it. If an online printer would suit you better, your consultant will tell you.
